Boo! Finished Halloween Quilt
Remember this quilt top from last year?

I figured I should quilt it before Halloween came around this year! Thankfully, I had some deliciously halloween-y variegated thread from Aurifil (4648).
I decided to find a triangle-based free motion quilting pattern and ultimately selected Triangle Starships design from Leah Day as the basis for my quilting. I wasn’t able to quilt as consistently and evenly as Leah does because of the limits of my skill and also because I prefer patterns that nod to the patchwork rather than roam all over, so my quilting is often altered in recognition of the edge of a block or the design within the block.
The quilting is far from perfect, but I love the quilt overall and so does Jon (I made this quilt as a gift for Jon). I’ve promised myself not to point out the problem areas to him, but I’ll tell you: I’m not as good with the acute corners in those triangles as I am with ones in squares, so the backside of the quilting can look a bit funky with the thread pulling a bit.
No major problems, though. The quilt lies flat and I think it looks great!
Jon is such a fan of Halloween that there are a million props at the house right now to use in styling this quilt.
The Halloween Quilt:
- Lap Size: I will measure exactly and update later
- Patchwork design : improv spooky triangles (my own variation on a pinwheel)
- Quilting design: triangle starships (from Leah Day) with improvisation
- Fabrics in top: Ghost Fabric from Lizzy House; my own handmade gray batiks; orange Ruta from Lotta Jansdotter; the purple solids are Cabernet and Verve Violet from Art Gallery; and various fabrics from my stash.
- Binding: Sarah Watson’s Pebble Path in Terra, cut on the bias
- Thread: Aurifil 50 weight in a neutral color for piecing, Aurifil 4648 in 50 weight for quilting.

We don't really celebrate Halloween in Australia, thank goodness, 'cause that first picture is freaky! I don't know how well I would handle walking down the street seeing displays like this, and then seeing everyone dressed up on the night. Eek! I would be using that Halloween quilt to pull up over my head any time I saw or heard anything spooky 🙂
It looks like a great quilt for cuddling up with this Halloween. Nice choice of thread and quilting pattern.
As a friend of mine likes to say, "Boo Humbug." I'm really more of a Thanksgiving gal myself, that's the one I'd miss if I lived outside of the USA!
I supposed if I mentioned that not celebrating Halloween probably saves us a small fortune on lollies, alone, I would sound even more Scroogey, so I won't mention it… but it's true 🙂 Having said that, it is October 31st here already, and when I picked my kids up from school today they asked me what trick or treating is, and mentioned that some of the kids from school were going to be doing it tonight, so I guess I better buy some treats just in case. But I'm guessing they will only go to houses that they have already organised to go to, and have let the person know in advance that they'll be visiting.
Enjoy your scary day. Thanksgiving sounds like my kind of holiday.
