Strips Of White And Gray Fabrics

Lines by Design Quilts by Debbie Grifka

I could not be more excited to share this new book with you all today! It was written by my friend and fellow member of the Ann Arbor Modern Quilt Guild, Debbie Grifka (AKA Esch House Quilts). I knew Debbie was writing a book last year, but I didn’t see any of the projects until last fall when I glimpsed her cover image on a flyer at Quilt Market.

Isn’t that a beautiful cover?
I couldn’t have been more pumped about this image as it immediately told me two things: (1) Debbie’s quilts in this book promised to be exciting and they (2) looked like her work…the very best of her work. I just love it when people get to write THEIR book–a book that clearly and beautifully expresses their voice. When you’ve been in a guild with someone for almost 5 years, you get to know their style pretty well, and this book is so on point for Debbie.  Debbie is a master of deceptively simple compositions.

I’ve now seen the whole book and highly recommend that you take a look at the quilts in the book (almost all of them can be seen on this blog hop, links below) and then buy the book online or from your local quilt store. [The amazon link is an affiliate link.]

Debbie has been writing patterns for quite a few years, so her skill at providing clear and concise instructions is pretty great. If you like the look of the quilts, you’ll be happy with the book.

For the blog hop, Debbie asked each of us to look at a different quilt close-up. I was really pleased that I was able to select the cover quilt, Fault Line, as I’m pretty sure I’m its #1 fan.

Fault Line Lines by Design 2

I love Debbie’s vibrant version, but when I read in the pattern that it’s made from 2-1/2” strips, my mind immediately went to a box I have in my studio that holds all the white, black, and gray strips pulled from various jelly rolls.  It has been a box in search of a project, and seeing Fault Line, I knew I had to make a version in shades of gray.

Yes? Yes!
Of course, the trick will be figuring out what to put as that fault line. I have contemplated as few different saturated colors, but I think what I really want is a print with a white background and little bits of rainbow somethings sprinkled about.  As it turns out, a fabric matching that description is not currently in my stash, so I’ll have to wait until I can find it and buy it!

Would you like to make something from this book?  Please leave a comment below, make sure I’ll be able to reach you should you win!  The winner will have their choice of a paper or PDF copy of the book (non-US winners must select the PDF version).  Enter by 5pm EST on Tuesday March 15, 2016.     A winner has been pulled from the hat.  Congrats Rosalind!

  7. By the cover that book looks intriguing. I’d love to see your version in black and white and gray tones.

    1. I’m a bit fussy about how and when black is used in quilts, so I had not used my black strips from various lines and was keeping them together assuming the right project would come along. And then once I have a pile going, I just add to it when the right things come up…the grays and whites etc. 🙂

  8. I love this blog tour and your honest enthusiasm; it’s contagious. Thank you!

  9. this seems like such a wonderful book. i am loving the quilt on the cover. thanks for sharing. your quilt is going to look fabulous when done.

  18. It looks like a really interesting book. Your post is the first one I’ve seen of the book so I’ll have to go on to the other blog hop posts

  20. can’t wait to get a look at this book. love the front cover and the quilt that you are going to make. Can’t wait to see yours.

  21. Love the cover quilt. I have some beautiful batiks jelly rolls, waiting for the right project. Maybe cool colors on top, warm on the bottom, with a multi-color dividing strip? Hmmm, need the book!

  22. This book tour has been fabulous so far. I’m looking forward to seeing your version. As far as the fault line, maybe use a different bright color for each angle? Would be fun to play with fabric choices using EQ

  23. I love the cover quilt as well! And one I saw earlier with the line “drawings” of houses. I’ll bet this book is just full of fun! I’m intrigued by your plan for the neutral version of the color quilt, and I can relate to your vision of “this is just the fabric I need” and it’s something you don’t have. Or it doesn’t exist! Been there, done that.

  24. I have admired the Fault Line quil since I first saw it, but I really like your version with grays! Thanks for the give-away!

  25. If I were making it using your colour choices I would have to use one of Artisian shimmers in turquoise as the fault line. Thank you for the opportunity to win.

  26. The cover image is gorgeous. I wouldn’t have thought of doing it in neutrals but looking at your fabric pull makes me keen to do something similar

  27. I, like you, love this quilt and would enjoy making it immensely! Thanks for the chance to win!

  28. Have the book and am about to start making the pillows that our living room so badly needs. Right book at the right time.

  29. I am currently making table runners in greys that look very much like the cover picture of this book! I think I could make that cover quilt in blues and greys…….

  30. I love the cover quilt! It is just wonderful! I like your idea of using neutrals – very interesting! churcae(at)auburn(dot)edu

  36. The parts of this book that I have seen look great. I would love to see the rest.

  37. Love the vibrancy of the cover quilt Fault Line. I would probably make this quilt with a bit of purple added in. Looking forward to seeing your low volume version of the quilt.

  38. Watermark is my favorite so far and I will make that one. It fits my daughter’s style and it is a small project, i.e. finished by Winter Solstice 🙂

  39. I have seen so many amazing projects from this book- the bias tape applique is something I really want to try! I think your plan for Fault Line is going to look stunning!

  40. I would love to make a quilt from this book. Not sure which quilt but I will pick one if I win.

  41. This looks like a lovely book. Love the minimalist look of some of the designs x

  42. I too have a collection of black and white fabrics… not just strips. It would be fun to do the cover pattern with a bright blue or red fault line.

  43. What a clever idea to pull those out of your jelly rolls. That’s going to be a gorgeous version of this quilt!!

  44. My niece is headed to college in the fall. She would love one of these quilts I am sure maybe B&W with a red stripe.

  45. I’m really liking that pillow with the short bars. But I’m a sucker for pillows anyway. I’d love to see your final grey quilt. I’m sure it will be lovely. Thanks for the chance to win this book.

  46. What a great book! I’d like to see your Fault Line be a black with rainbow sprinkles and I have the perfect fabric in my stash. I do love your choice for the strips. That may be the first thing I make from this book, once I get one. I’ll use all those strips from the greys swap we had in class three years ago and that black with bright colored sprinkles. Thanks!

  47. This book looks great. For “a white background and little bits of rainbow somethings sprinkled about” you could try ColorWorks Concepts phases 1 and 2 by Northcott, there are several fabrics that might suit.

  48. What I’ve seen of the book so far, here and on the other blogs, looks amazing!

  49. The cover inspires me to branch out from traditional blocks and makes me want more Jelly Rolls!

  50. I’m enjoying this blog hop and loving the projects especially the cover quilt and the pillows. Thanks for the chance to win!

  51. Hi Rossie, it’s so cool to meet you via Blog. I’d love to whip up the Fault LIne quilt too, as I finally have an appreciation for neutrals and low volumne prints too. Thank you for sharing.

  52. i hadn’t seen this blog hop, so i’m glad you’re part of it! the book looks really great, but i especially appreciate your honest feedback. i totally understand what you mean by “when people get to write THEIR book”, those are always the best books to read!

  53. I think you chose a great quilt to review. Im betting your color scheme is going to kick it!

  54. Love the look of this book. Can’t wait to get a chance to check it out and be inspired to create something beautiful.

  55. This blog hop is wonderful. Would love to win this book by Debbie: I have made 2 quilts and both are slight variations of Debbie’s patterns. I am drawn to modern quilts that are interesting and asymmetrical. Your black & white color scheme will be interesting to see once completed! like your idea of the small splash of color your planning on.
