Last month, one of my favorite fabric & quilt designers, Carolyn Friedlander, published a free…
Moments & Spotlights from The Appliqué Book by Casey York
I’ve been waiting with bated breath to show these quilts to you!
This is Moments
It’s made from some of my favorite Teagan White prints and I couldn’t love it more. It’s a reverse appliqué pattern, meaning that the bright prints are behind the white fabrics. Because I attached the layers about 1/4-inch back from the edge of the circle, it has a flange, which I just love. Complete instructions are in the book!
My second quilt in The Appliqué Book is Spotlights. It’s also a reverse appliqué quilt, but it’s got a few improv twists.
I have to say, having spent some time reading this book over the last week, that I’m really very impressed with it! The instructions are clear and concise and it covers a wide variety of appliqué techniques and aesthetics.
Would you like to win a copy of this book? Please leave a comment below, you don’t have to say anything in particular, but please make sure I’ll be able to reach you should you win! The winner will have their choice of a paper or PDF copy of the book (non-US winners must select the PDF version). Enter by 5pm EST on Thursday March 31, 2016. (a winner has been chosen!)
And hey! Bonus chance to win a paper copy directly from me! Pop over to my Guide to Quilting Books and leave me a book recommendation or add to the discussion there and I’ll draw a second name from that pool of entries.
Got that?

EDITED TO ADD:
If you are making the Spotlights quilt, you may find the following image in the instructions to be confusing:
This photo makes it look like the quilt was assembled in blocks. It was not. While the text is clear that the off-white background piece was a single cut of fabric into which the holes were cut, this photo, by showing the edges of the larger piece of white fabric, suggests that the background was composed of several small pieces. Anyway, should any confusion arise, the text is correct, not the photo.

Your quilts turned out very nice!
Those are some fun fabrics for sure!
Two fabulous quilts – I love them!
Looks awesome! Congratulations!
I have not tried reverse applique but I love the look of your two quilts!
I love the illusion of so much party going on behind the background with reverse appliqué. And the flange just makes it more pronounced…. Lovely work Rossie!
Hi, Thanks for the opportunity to win such a wonderful book. Applique is something I haven’t tried much of except a little here and there. Having said that, I have been meaning to try reverse applique as my next project.
I tried reverse hand applique ONCE! Yours looks better!!
Trying reverse Applique just happens to be next on my list. And speaking of lists, this book is at the top of my wish list. Love your quilts!
I love both of your quilts and the quilting on them is awesome. This book looks great. I can’t wait to see it.
Congratulations on having two quilts featured! I’ve never tried reverse appliqué, but I’d like to soon.
I love circle quilts! What fun for you to be published!
Reverse appliqué sounds hard buy maybe??
This is lovely! What a great way to spotlight favorite fabrics!
Moments is just precious
I’ve never tried reverse applique, but I love your quilt and should give it a try.
OMG, leave it to you Rossie to come up with two very inspired and gorgeous quilts. I love them both!
Would love an applique book with modern designs!
I haven’t done much applique but do really like the two you have in the book. I think I’d try the first one. This book would be a great addition to my Modern guild library of which I am the librarian. Hope to win and add it to our collection.
Beautiful quilts. I love the flange effect the reverse appliqué gives.
I love both of your quilts! Excited to see some of the others in there …
This book looks great- and your quilts are beautiful!
The imperfect shapes of Spotlight are so excellent, this quilt of yours is already generating ideas….
Beautiful! I really need to try more low volume. I’m always attracted to fabrics with jewel tones that are saturated with them. I’ve done some reverse applique using freezer paper and hand stitching, would love to try it on the machine.
These are both great quilts! Looking forward to checking out this book.
Your quilts are very nice. And I would love to read this book.
love both of the quilts…gives me some ideas for using a stash of fabric I’ve been hoarding…
Brava. The improv is a WOW!!

Oh, these are both so beautiful. I’d love to win this to see what the other quilts look like!
Gorgeous quilts!
I’d really like to learn more about applique and the different techniques to use them on quilts. I love how fabrics can be fussy-cut to show favorite parts/designs. Applique adds such a special touch.

Moments is crazy inspirational! I have all the heart eyes for that flange… and the reverse applique… and I totally want to drop everything I am working on and make my version!

Reverse appliqué is on my (rather long) list of techniques to try. This book might be my excuse to get to it.
Just finished my first appliqué top- and I can’t wait for more!
What a great book to own. I am fascinated with everything you showed us.
